Apoyeque Volcano

Managua
Description

Located about 10 kilometers from Managua is the Chiltepe Peninsula, on the coast of the central part of Lake Managua, also known as Xolotlán. This peninsula is made up of two lagoons, Apoyeque and Xiloá. Apoyeque was formed after an eruption of the volcano with the same name. The Apoyeque volcano erupted thousands of years ago. In 1988, the temperatures of the lagoon began to rise and a strong smell of sulfur began to be felt. There are fumaroles still active in this volcano. Despite being inactive, there is some volcanic activity around Apoyeque.

Xiloá is located next to the Apoyeque volcano, on the same peninsula on Lake Managua. It is easy to get to this lagoon, thanks to a paved road that leads to it. However, the Apoyeque Lagoon is separated from the Xiloá Lagoon by a huge volcanic wall, which makes it a bit more difficult to reach. The view of the surroundings includes Lake Managua. The visit from this peninsula, near Managua, is worth it.
