San Cristobal Volcano
Description
The San Cristóbal volcano is the highest and most active volcano in Nicaragua. This smoking cone-shaped mountain has the traditional characteristics of a volcano.
There are several volcanoes located around San Cristóbal; in fact, this area is called the San Cristóbal Volcanic Complex and comprises five volcanic structures. This complex also includes San Cristóbal, Casita, Chonco, Moyotepe and La Pelona; San Cristóbal is the most active of the group. This volcano continuously emits gases and from time to time there is seismic activity around it.
The ascent of San Cristóbal is one of the most difficult in Nicaragua. Its steep slopes make the journey to the crater difficult. It takes a whole day to go up and down this volcano and to do so you must be in good physical condition. The climb is a real challenge, but once at the top, the views are worth all the effort. Guides can be found in the cities of León and Chinandega.
